AS YOU SAID (1968) by Cream featuring Jack Bruce
|
This song is off Cream's double album Wheels of Fire, released in August 1968. However it was almost completely performed by Jack Bruce, consisting of acoustic guitars, cellos and vocals (according to one source, Ginger Baker contributed an occasional high hat). Bruce did ask Clapton to play on it, but stated that "he encouraged me to do it. I was always embarrassed about my acoustic guitar playing-especially when you had Eric Clapton in the band". Jack used an open guitar tuning shown to him by Richie Havens. I love this track because of Jack's cello playing and vocals, and as it contrasts with the group songs. It was written by Jack with his frequent writing partner at the time, lyricist Pete Brown. There is no clip available for this version of the song, so I have created my own slideshow video.
