Moby - Alice [2008]
|
Moby [born Richard Melville Hall on September 11th 1965] is an American songwriter, musician and singer. He was born in Harlem, New York, and raised in Darien, Connecticut. After eight Top 40 techno singles in the UK in the 1990s, his biggest hit was his album 'Play', released in 1999, which sold 9 million copies worldwide. His parents nicknamed him Moby soon after birth, partly after the novel Moby-Dick, which was written by Herman Melville, his great-great-great-great uncle. He plays keyboard, guitar, bass guitar and drums. He has also released music under the names Voodoo Child, Barracuda, Brainstorm, UHF, The Brotherhood, DJ Cake, Lopez, Mindstorm, Schaumgummi, and Pippy Baliunas. He has received attention for his political, environmental and religious beliefs, which he has outlined in the liner notes of his albums. 'Last Night' is Moby's ninth studio album and was released on March 31st 2008 in the United Kingdom and April 1st 2008 in the USA. The album was recorded in Moby's home studio in Manhattan, New York and features a number of guest vocalists, including MC Grandmaster Caz, one of the writers of 'Rapper's Delight' [on 'I Love to Move in Here'], Sylvia from the band Kudu, British MC Aynzli and the Nigerian 419 Squad. On his official website, Moby stated that this album is "a lot more dance-oriented and electronic than my last few albums, probably as a result of all of the DJ'ing I've been doing lately". He also wrote that, "Last Night is basically a love letter to dance music in New York City. What I love about the New York approach to dance music is the eclecticism and the open minded-ness on the part of the musicians, the DJ's, and the people in the bars and clubs. In making Last Night, I essentially tried to take a long 8 hour night out in New York City and condense it into a 65 minute long album". Two singles have been released from the album, 'Disco Lies' [January 21st 2008] and 'Alice' [March 17th 2008]. The album includes a hidden track 'Lucy Vida', which I have extracted and included as track 15 for your listening convenience.
