Concierto De Aranjuez....is definitive red wine music. People say this song about a bullfighter...that's bullshit. I think this song is about how the Moors must have felt when the Crusades ended.

I didn't know there was a jazz version of it. It was originally written for guitar and orchestra, by Joachin Rodrigo. (Now it's my turn to sneer ). It's funny how you described it, because I went to a concert of it with Christopher Parkening (famous classical guitarist) and they talked about how EVERYONE who listens to it imagines different emotions to go along with it. Some see it as a piece about love, some about grief... To me it sounds like a despairing love song.

By the way, what is "classical guitar"? I always thought it was a bunch of cats playing "Green Sleeves" in pompous hats and white stockings. Or maybe the theme music to the Vega stage of Street Fighter 2.

Does the classical version of Concierto have the lingering "Soh" (in choir notation, I don't remember music lettering anymore) kind of flickering in the end? I think it done by Miles, makes the song that much open to interpretation...kind of his way of getting the last laugh...

...Moorish roots (and other African turbulences) make my interpretation what is. Listen to the song, PLEASE! I have to listen to the classical version again, but the trumpet solo....sounds like the kind of song one intentionally fathoms life to. A total Leaving Las Vegas vibe....maybe not to that extreme, but certainly red wine.

Snob yourself. I do have that album, and it's one of my FAVORITES. Classical guitar, by the way, is just like any other instrument. (Like classical piano as opposed to jazz piano, etc., you know).

"Soh"? You use solfege? Awesome! Well the concerto has three movements, but the middle one (the adagio) is the most famous. That's the one that people get emotional about. And yes, it has a progression up to one lingering note at the end.

I've heard brass ensemble versions of it (like in the film "Brassed Off") but never the Miles Davis recording. I'd like to though.

But yes, naturally there are Moorish roots, because it's from Spain!

I've been listening to a lot of Herbie Hancock myself & of course Cinematic Orchestra is one of my favorite groups & I love Carl Craig's Jazz projects (Detroit Experiment, Innerzone Orchestra), oh & Bob James & a lot of Jazz Funk. I prefer stuff that's not brass based. I'm just not big on brass instruments, so I prefer stuff centered around synths (that's where Herbie comes in), bass & drums. Not that I can't listen to brass based stuff.
