I want to know why everyone thinks the dude is so great, Ive heard every song hes ever made thats been released, so Im wondering what songs yall think are the best that put him where he is(if you think hes the best).

NOTICE!! dont put some shit like "listen to all of reasonable doubt" or some shit like that..Im more interested other shit. like for me I dig Beach Chair, Guns and roses although I hate the fucking chorus, pray, and some older shit.

BTW never thought he is or was the best, just better than most by default(everyone else died except nas who murdered him in that battle).

heres some of mine apart from the obvious :
pray
beach chair
a star is born
do you wanna ride
politics as usual

Never been a big fan of him. I only own one album (Blueprint, being the only one I've heard in entirety) and have only heard a handful of miscellaneous songs...

To the point: Favorite song of mine is "Meet the Parents"

My personal favorites: Coming of age, regrets, can't knock the hustle, dead presidents 2... I think the guy is pretty consistent, he has some clever lines. He's not in my top 5, however, I think people like him because he avoids the drama, has been in the game for a long time, presents himself well (outside of rap), has swagger raps, is inspiring (to some), smart, and is married to possibly the most gorgeous woman in pop... I've heard he doesn't write anything down in the studio, gotta respect that.

To an extent, yeah... but to add to the mythology, what I've heard is that he doesn't write he just comes up with 4-6 bars... lays it down... comes up with 4-6 more bars... lays it down... rinse and repeat... but people are under the impression that he's literally "freestyling" entire verses when, if this scenario is true, that's nothing close to freestyling...
Will never know 'til I see him in the studio, though.

you have Jay confused with Wayne on that one......several people have backed up the story that the "Fiesta (Remix)" video came on TV in the studio at the same time as Jay went to lay "Heart Of The City" and that he had the song laid, hooks and all before the video was even over

It's purely rumor material... I've heard about multiple artists doing that same shit... i.e. Beans, Kanye, Jada, Luda, Chamillionaire, etc.... nowhere near freestyling, even though it is a pen and paperless style of laying down their tracks.

Anyway my short list of fave Jay tracks is...

D'Evils
A Million and One
You, Me, Him, and Her w/Beans, Memph, and Amil
NYMP
Friend or Foe I and II
Bring It On
Streets Is Watching
Where I'm From
Hard Knock Life
Reservoir Dogs w/Lox and Beans
U Don't Know
What More Can I Say?
Lucifer
Meet The Parents
Bitches and Sisters
Hovi Baby
Peoples Court

True, but whatever the case, I'm still amazed by that "People's Court" song. I forgot to mention this as an honorable mention. Jay went in something serious.

Not downplaying it at all... just stating what I've heard...

...and what I've heard was 'bout that Jay-Z fella. Whether the person I heard it from was confused is a different story.

Either way, it's heresay to something I never personally witnessed, so please just ignore my posts.

people also forget that no one else was claiming not to write their stuff down until Jay came out and said it

that may be true but that doesn't mean others weren't doing it before him.
