I remember watching this movie when it just came out and I was blown away by the beginning of the movie. I never remembered much of the film other than the first part

I rewatched it a few weeks ago and my God what a crappy movie!!! The beginning is still outstanding but once they get to Vietnam it just goes downhill. It's like you've seen it all before. There are so many 'Nam movie that are better than this.

Anyone who thinks this is great need to get of Kubricks nuts

I'm a big time Kubrick fan and this is Definitely not one of his best movies.. but still very enjoyable. I have to admit the first half is much better than the second half though.

Yeah, when I watch it it IS mostly for the first part. I think the rest of it is decent enough to watch though. Not the best, but there is definitely worse.

Excluding The Shining, I don't generally like Kubrick's films, and I think he personally is quite a pretentious asshole, but I do think FMJ is a brilliant film. I just watched it again last night for the first time in years, the boot camp part always stuck with me, but I'd forgotten the Vietnam scenes. I don't see it so much as a war movie as a movie about the psychology of man when facing a situation like these guys were, just so happened to be Vietnam in this case.

But yea, I guess I was about 8 or so when I saw it for the first time, and the whole sequence with Pyle that ended out the first half, it fucked me up in a major way. Most of all, those faces he made while holding his rifle on Harttman, I could never get out of my head for as long as I live.

Seven-six-two millimeter. Full. Metal. Jacket.

I agree, the parts in Nam dont really stick in memory as the Boot Camp scenes. This movie is indeed great though, theres only one action scene in the movie which was probably the only down part. To become notarized as a great movie in a generation where great movies were defined by explosions and gun fights, is pretty damn awesome.

This film made my brother join the Marines. I thought it was great up until the guy steals the camera...then it just turns good. The girl sniper poppin them out the building was ill. Overall, I would say this is a film about Vietnam...you want a movie, watch Predator.
