As a child I used to leave movies wanting to be Indiana Jones or He-Man. I'd dance down the street pretending boulders were rolling after me or the hordes of evil had their skeletal eyes trained on my every move and I'd had to use every inch of cunning to defeat them. It was a time of fantasy and fun. But alas those days came and went in the blink of an eye and I lost the will to be the hero.
After having seen "The Incredibles" last night my hero spirit was rekindled! I wanted to take out bad guys with an iron fist to the jaw protecting the innocents of the world and if that's what it did to me it must have had double the affect on little kids. There's one word to describe "The Incredibles" and that's "incredible". I'd even go as far to say it's "in-fucking-credible" but it's a kids movie so I'll hush my mouth like Isaac Hayes.
This is not your average animation as I watched it defecate from great heights all over "Finding Nemo" and even manages to poke "Toy Story" and it's sequel in the eye with a hefty index finger. Movie of the year? Top three...easily.
Having watched "X Men", "Spider Man", "Daredevil" and the rest of the recent super hero movies that have been released I can't help but think "The Incredibles" shows them how to do it. The action is SUPERB and that's rare from a Pixar movie. You don't expect to see villains battered beyond belief whether it be by force fields, speedy kids, super strength or an elasticated fist. This film couldn't be done better is Jesus took up animation.
The comedy isn't as heavy as movies like "Toy Story" but when it comes it provides hearty laughs for kids and adults alike (the recognition of Samuel L. Jackson's usual shouty tones is an amusement itself). Parents will recognize the typical family war zone in the movie and kids will love the blatant slap stick humour. This is, indeed, a movie for everyone.
Although it's quite noticable that specific elements have been stolen from such things as "Fantastic Four", "X Men", James Bond movies and "Return of the Jedi" it doesn't even allow for sighs or annoyance as it tackles these homages with skill and excellence.
Watch this movie if you have to see one movie this year.
