um, kafka is good too.

kafka, proust, joyce, beckett: these'll do you fine.

i like gogol as well, and one you don't hear much of but is a real gem is
'a hero of our time' by lermontov.. it's short too, so you don't have to be all intellectual to give it a try.. homeboy was all up on that existentialist ish well before it was cool in france.

on which tip, heidegger and kierkegaard are good.

and the mr men books.

peace

mos definitely, i just finished reading that and the follow up book, No Longer at Ease. they're both by chinua achebe, an african author. ironically enuff it was for my africa in a world setting class.

also american dreamsby sapphire. very powerful book.

and a child called it by dave peltzer, i believe that is his last name, it might be misspelled tho. it'll make you sick, but it's true because of the abuse his mother gave to him. he has two follow up books to that and i don't remember them right now, but they are very gut-wrenching.

"DIARY OF A MADMAN" by Nikolai Gogol.

First published in 1834. It's a short story, but a good read.
It's the first-hand writings of a mental patient in an asylum.
The narrator goes crazier and crazier as you turn the pages.
At one point, he's convinced that he's the Queen of Spain.
Kinda illustrates the world through a madman's eyes.

^ damn, that kind of book can mess with your mind though.

Once I was in the university library, just cruising round the shelves, and I saw a book 'the writings of the insane' - I thought it would be an interesting read. When I looked at it, they had photocopies of how these people wrote. Really scribbely, and really weird. I couldnt really understand a word, but it looked scary-like. Some of the pictures as well, were like 'what the hell?' Just parts of the paper intensely scribbled on, intermittant writing here and there.

It messed with my mind for about 5-10 minutes after..

who will speak for the trees? Dr. Seuss was on to something with a lot of his books. At a course on environmental policy at Yale, one of the books discussed was the Lorax...

Stephen King is the shit, he's all I read. The first book I read was IT and I loved it, so I have read many other books. Desperation (decent), The Regulators (bad), Insomnia (very good), etc. I forgot all of them. I am currently reading the 4th chapter in the Dark Tower series, they are my favourite pieces of Stephen King literature, definitely worth the read.
