Day26

After much success with Danity Kane, Diddy sets his eyes on another group from his reality show series, "Making The Band 4." Fans and MTV viewers got to know them on TV, but how did they take to each other when the cameras stopped rolling? How has their music evolved since being formed? How did they get their name?

Already in a second season, members of "Making The Band 4" -- Brian Andrews, Mike McCluney, Qwanell Mosley, Robert Curry, and Willie Taylor -- sit down with BallerStatus.com to talk about their the new album, moving into a house with Danity Kane, the pressures of working with Diddy, and all the other questions everybody wants to know.

BallerStatus.com: How did the name Day26 come about?

Will: The finale for our show last season for "Making The Band 4" was on August 26 and that day really changed our lives, so when we were going through a list of names. We wanted something that really meant a lot to us, so we went with Day26.

BallerStatus.com: Since being in the band, how have your lives changed?

Brian: Our lives have changed tremendously, from people noticing us to us to not [being] able to go to the malls or even grocery stores. I would say it's not a bad thing. We all feel very blessed and we wouldn't change anything about it.

BallerStatus.com: What was the response from friends and family?

Q: It's been kind of crazy. I've been getting like new family members. I'm pretty sure all of us have gotten new family members, but at the same time, it's a blessing 'cause we can help are family now, put them in that big house, the dream car. They all wanted. It's a blessing, but at the same time, it's irritating.

BallerStatus.com: In the second season of "Making The Band 4," what was your reaction after hearing that you would be working on an album at the same time as Donnie and Danity Kane?

Robert: We were real excited. First of all, to be working with platinum selling artists like Danity Kane, we feel that we have a lot that we can learn from them. On top of that, Donnie is like our brother, so it was good to have him there. We were real excited about that.

BallerStatus.com: Was there any added pressure?

Day26: No! (laughs)

BallerStatus.com: On the show, Diddy comes by time to time to check up on you guys, but it seems when he watches you perform, nerves tend to build up. Is it hard to perform in front of him?

Brian: I would say at first it was like that because... I mean, Diddy is a very powerful man and sometimes he can be intimidating. But now, it's not like that anymore. We pretty much understand who he is. He's a perfectionist.

BallerStatus.com: He is also very straight forward when he deals with you guys, whether it be calling people out if they are not delivering or sending you back in for voice training. How do you take his criticism and turn it into a positive?

Mike: You always got to take his criticism a certain way because if you take it too personal, you'll never get over it. You'll let it haunt you forever (laughs). Try to take the little ten percent that look like it's some good, it's some good.

BallerStatus.com: What was going through your minds when you got word that your album had to be recorded in five weeks?

Will: We thought it was a lot of pressure. Usually people take years to record their album. They have a huge catalogue to go from, but we notice people have been submitting songs for a long time to Bad Boy for us and we knew Diddy was going to somehow pick the best songs that were submitted. We're really happy with our project now. At first, it seemed like the impossible, but right now it's done. We love it and we're looking for great things on March 25th.

BallerStatus.com: Another surprise Diddy had up his sleeve was for you to share a house with Danity Kane. What was that experience like?

Q: It was quite interesting that they are women and that we love the ladies. That one was hard because five men (plus Donnie) and five girls inside the house. It's kind of hard. It was interesting because we had different personalities like the Aubrey's and the different people. The Aubrey's, I'll say that again (laughs), but it was pretty cool. Just experiencing that with eleven different personalities was cool. It was an experience that I think everybody should experience in their lifetime.

BallerStatus.com: Q, you actually got to know one member of Danity Kane pretty well. Ss there something there between you and Dawn?

Q: It's crazy chemistry between me and Dawn. She's a wonderful woman. I think any man would be lucky to have Dawn and to have a girl like Dawn in their life. I'm really happy we're friends. We're not together, but hopefully in the future, she is my woman.

BallerStatus.com: Getting back to Day26, you didn't know each other at the beginning of the "Making The Band" series. How do you explain the connection today?

Brian: I think the normal group wouldn't have gelled together as fast as we did, but due to the fact that the situation we were put in, I think that we were almost forced to get to know each other. I think with us gelling together so fast, it's unbelievable. Like how much love we got for each other, it's not even like group members. It's like we're more like brothers. We have our problems just like brothers, but at the end of the day we all love and respect each other.

BallerStatus.com: How much have you grown as a group?

Will: I feel like [we did] a whole lot from being in competition with each other, not knowing each other well. Once we found out who our group members were going to be, we went home on a long vacation. We didn't really have time to gel, plus to come back and Diddy [said] we were in competition with Danity Kane, it made us gel a lot quicker. I think our bond... like Brain said "We are like brothers." We have a common goal at heart and we're just trying to reach our goal. I think we all came in to sell a lot of records and make great music. That's one thing, if we ever fall out with each other, it's like a brotherly fall out. We know what we are trying to do [and] that is to go the top. That's one goal we have together, so we probably never fall apart knowing we have that goal.

BallerStatus.com: What is like being compared to groups such as 112 and New Edition?

Brian: Honestly, I feel like being compared to those guys, it's somewhat of an honor because these guys sold millions of records. They made a huge impact on the industry in their time, so being compared to groups like Jodeci or 112 or New Edition, we look at that like "Wow.. thank you!"

Will: I guess once people really get to know us and see what we do and what we bring to the industry, then a lot of that's going to change. In the door, they got to compare us to somebody. So, they want to say "Ok, they remind me of New Edition, they remind me of 112, they remind me of Jodeci." We learn from those guys, we listen to their records like everybody else, so we do have a piece of that in us, combined together we bring a whole other sound, which I'm anxious to let you all hear.

BallerStatus.com: We already know Diddy has high expectations for you, what are your expectations?

Mike: Multi-platinum!

Will: We want to sell a million in a week. We have high expectations. We want to reach the sky. We want to do something that hasn't been done. We have a huge engine behind us -- MTV, Bad Boy, Atlantic. Everybody has been rooting for us heavy, so we just want to be out there. We want to do our job. We want this bad. We just hope fans respect our music, don't bootleg, March 25th get that album.

BallerStatus.com: Is there a name for your album yet?

Will: It's self-titled, Day26, but it's coming out on the 25th. It's a banging album, a lot of great producers [and] a lot of great writers.

BallerStatus.com: Could you talk about your new single, "Got Me Going?"

Robert: The single "Got Me Going" produced by Diddy and Mario Winans. It's a club track.

Will: That's a fast track and we're doing crazy vocal arrangements on a fast track. That shows skills, so I want people to pay attention to that. Listen to the vocal skill that we're doing on a fast pace track, a lot of singers can't do that and we did that, so we deserve props for that.
