I'm here chillin with Supastition today, how's everything homie?
Everything is good right now. Just staying busy and trying to knock out some of the projects.
So I see you got the single "Word Has It" out their getting a lot of love right now, tell us about that?
'Word Has It' was one the first songs I recorded after my 2 year hiatus. I was in Raleigh the night before doing a show so me and Khrysis hooked up the next day to record it. I didn't really push the song too hard at first but the buzz grew faster than I expected. I got some major radio spins on Hot 97 and some other big stations.
And your new EP "Leave of Absence" came out in September?
It kept getting pushed back but it finally hit iTunes in October '07. I'm just grateful that it's finally available for the fans and those who have been waiting on some new music from me.
Who are some of the producers and guest artists on this project?
I worked with my man DJ D.R. on about 3 tracks. He's from Charlotte (NC) so we've been working together on alot of music lately since he's more accessible than some of the other producers that I've worked with in the past. I got beats from Khrysis and Marco Polo and production from some up & comers such as Analogic, Keelay, Madwreck, and Veterano. I'm not big on alot of guest being on my projects so I got one posse cut featuring Torae, Dan Johns, and Finale. My homie Slo Mo from Fortilive, which is Illmind's group, did a hook for me as well. I made a conscious effort to work with new people on this EP. Some people are gonna dig it because its something fresh and others will probably hate it because they are expecting The Deadline pt II.
"Leave of Absence" was released on your label Reform School Music, what made you want to bring it home on this one?
The point of me launching the label in the first place was to release side projects that I didn't feel other labels would be interested in. Nobody really likes to release EPs anymore and there aren't as many big names on this one so I wasn't expecting labels to show interest. I decided to make 'Leave of Absence' my first release for RSM (Reform School Music). I'm not a believer in the 'industry standard' because alot of the ideas and practices are outdated. I didn't want anyone tampering with my ideas. Its kinda like if you go to the dealership to buy a Toyota, you expect to come home with a Toyota. Sure, for a few hundred more you could have a Lexus but that isn't what you came there for. I did the The Deadline as an EP and it was marketed and promoted like an album. In so many words, I had a plan and I wanted to keep it true to the original idea.
I see the EP will be available on digital format only, do you see that pretty much taking over the way people are buying music these days?
It's more convenient for some people to buy music digitally. They no longer have to drive from store to store to find an album with poor distribution. I'm all about people having the options and freedom to buy what they like if they are choosing to spend their money on it. Digitally they can cop the songs that they like or purchase the whole project if they are feeling it as a whole. We are releasing the CD version in January '08 and it will include some exclusive tracks on it.
I know your not originally from Charlotte, but you been their for a minute....how is the hip hop scene there?
The scene out here is cool. There's alot of talented people in the QC (Charlotte) but we don't have enough outlets for independent hip hop artists. There are usually 1 or 2 places to perform but the scene is very small when it comes to smaller artists. When someone like Nas or Common comes to town, you'll see people really come out to support. Hopefully things will prosper and the scene grows stronger.
With today's technology do you think it really matters where artists are from these days to get notice in the industry?
Nah, that hasn't mattered since the late 90's in my opinion. Before you had to be from NYC or LA to be taken serious but those days are long gone. People just want good music and that's the bottom line. Those people who only want to hear music from their own area are probably people who haven't traveled outside of their region enough.
How do you feel myspace.com has helped you since you been on there? And is it worth having an artist site these days?
Myspace has helped me in terms of reaching people across the world and making my music more available to them. I've been on the site since it started so I was there before everybody and their cousin had a Myspace page. I've made alot of business connections because of it but I've also met some crazy ass people on there too.
Having an artist site is worth it if you have something that's interactive and updated constantly. If you're like me then you only have basic skills in HTML and updating a website requires too much time.
With everything goin on; the mixtape, new EP and touring I see you are in the middle of recording your upcoming third LP titled "The Limelight". What can you tell us about that and when can we expect that to come out?
I scrapped the Limelight project because I wanted to do some other things first. My next project will be released under my real name, Kam Moye, and its going to have alot of substance and speak on social issues. I just felt as if I needed to do more with my music and reach a new demographic than before. There aren't gonna be any angry songs or any battle raps....just concepts and heartfelt songs. If you liked songs like Fountain of Youth, The Williams, or Soul Searching then this project will appeal to those people. Me and M-phazes have been working together heavily on the Kam Moye project. This might be my most widely accepted album to date if all goes well. The album is called 'Splitting Image' because its different from the Supastition sound and image but it's still 100% me because these are my thoughts as a person. Me and D.R. just began work on an untitled project together. I'm real excited about that. Also, me and Illmind will probably get started on our collabo album that we've been talking about for the last year. We're going on tour together in Europe in January so we'll work out the details during that time. At this point, it's gonna be a minute before the next Supastition solo album comes out. It's gotta be anticipated if it's going to happen.
Alright man, thanks for taking the time out to do this....as always much appreciated. Feel free to let everyone know whats up and where we can check out more of your music and upcoming news.
