As fans across the globe mourn the death of international reggae star Lucky Dube, South African police have taken five men into custody as suspects in his murder.

According to the Associated Press, police spokesman Eugene Opperman said the five suspects were arrested this Sunday (October 21) morning and are due in court today (October 23).

"They will be appearing at the magistrate court to face various charges which will be specified later," Opperman said.

Police said the fives suspects range in age from 31 to 35. A number of the men are from Mozambique. During the police raid resulting in the suspects arrests, police seized two handguns believed to be stolen and a vehicle, allegedly used during the murder.

Dube was killed Thursday (October 18) in his native South Africa, the apparent victim of a carjacking attempt. Dube was shot three times shortly after dropping off two of his children at his brothers home in suburbanJohannesburg.

One of South Africa's most famous singers, Lucky Dube began his career in the 1980's by criticizing South Africa's apartheid regime. He recorded more than 20 albums in his career.

Friends of the reggae star told local South African news papers they believed Dube was the intended target of an assassination, however Opperman said police continue to believe the singer was killed when an attempted carjacking went awry.
