TOM PETTY + THE HEARTBREAKERS risked deportation form Germany before a TV performance when bass player RON BLAIR tried to smuggle a block of marijuana into the country. The group had stocked up on hash in Amsterdam, were the drug is legal, during a European tour in 1976, but had to dump it as they left Holland. German customs police found a pot pipe in drummer Stan Lynch's luggage and detained the band, prompting Blair to gobble up his hash stash. He was stoned for days and his "glazed" performance is captured on the group's new DVD documentary Runnin' Down A Dream. Petty recalls, "We've got big blocks of hash and we can't quite bring ourselves to throw it in the trash... but I threw mine away. "We get in line to go through customs in Germany and they find in Stan's bag a little hash pipe. There's no hash in the bag but there's a little hash pipe with a little bit of residue in the pipe. (The customs officials are like) `Out of the line.' "And Ron Blair's looking at me kinda funny, he smiles at me and his whole teeth are black - he's got a whole lump of hash in his mouth, and he's chewing... To chew a chunk of hash is a really big job." The customs police detained the group for an afternoon and they were eventually rescued by the producers of the Rockpalast show they were scheduled to perform on. The TV concert went ahead, even though Blair was as high as a kite. Petty adds, "I think we had to do about 40 minutes on the show. If you see the tape, there's a very glassy-eyed Ron Blair. He played like a champ."
