scarface

Now that the cover for Scarface's comeback album, Made, has hit the internet, I'm starting to get excited (*pause*), even though the artwork is retardedly over-animated. But before Brad Jordan drops his next album, I think Brad, Rap-A-Lot, Asylum, Warner and anyone else that plans on profiting from this album needs to understand that Made isn't going to sell a damn thing. It's not that ‘Face won't drop an ill album but he has too much going against him.

First off, he's old. Not that 36 is old in terms of life expectancy for human beings but when it comes to rappers, people kinda stop listening to shit you rap about at 35 and at that time BET stops playing your videos because your subject matter doesn't appeal to the 106 & Park generation. As Jay-Z found out the hard way, no one cares about having good credit and such. We wanna hear about having fucked up credit and making it out of the hood by any means necessary.

Also, Scarface doesn't dance. And in this day and age, you've got to have a dance for people to pay attention to your records. Joc'n. Two Step. The Cupid Shuffle. Crank Dat Soulja Boy. Crank Dat Roosevelt. Crank Dat Batman. Crank Dat Superman. Crank Dat "Insert Superhero here." Picture Scarface coming out with a cot-damn two step. Now, picture 2Pac spinning in his grave.

Another problem is that ‘Face is from Houston. This isn't a knock on the music coming out of Houston but for some reason, no one is really checking for artists from the H-Town (see Paul Wall, Mike Jones and Chamillionaire). You can be from Atlanta, say anything ignorant like, "She a very freaky gurl/Don't bring her to mamma/First you get her name then you get her number/Then you get some brain in the front seat of the hummer" and you'll get air-play all day. If you're from Florida, do a song with T-Pain or have DJ Khaled scream "We Da Best" over your record, you're good. Midwest, just make a beat that sounds like J. Dilla could have made it, thumps up. West Coast, do a song with Snoop, Game, Too Short or E-40, you're in there. New York.......ummmm....yeah, I'll get back you guys. But Houston, besides UGK (who should thank 3000 and Big Boi for the assist), things haven't really been working out lately. Hm, hakuna matata.

And as crazy as this sounds, a lot of people don't know who Scarface is. My lil' sis is 20-years-old and she didn't have a clue who ‘Face was when "Never" leaked to the internet. The only Scarface she knows is Tony Montana, which is so disheartening to me on so many levels, rather than educate her on Brad Jordan and his contributions to hip-hop, I just walked away and let it go. If you think about, I couldn't really be mad at her. The dude hasn't been a fixture in the game for quite some time. Take away that bullshit ass My Homies Part 2, that One Hunid album he did with that Product group he was trying to bring out and that Ghetto Boys comeback album. Then you have to look past that Balls And My Word album that Rap-A-Lot just threw out there for the fuck off it, his last solo album that can actually be viewed as credible is The Fix (which has to be my favorite Scarface album ever!). That was 2002. Five years ago. Too long ago.

I just hope this album is a critical success (I really could care less what it does commercially), and further cements Scarface's legacy in the game. I also just noticed that Made drops December 4th, the same day as the new Wu Tang album and that long overdue Saigon album but I'm sure neither the Wu nor Saigon are really gonna be released on that date. Hopefully Made doesn't suck like My Homies Part 2. I can take the album not doing numbers for the aforementioned reasons but if a legend like Scarface can't drop something of substance, hip-hop really is dead.
