Sacha Baron Cohen is to rap his way through the film version of Broadway musical Sweeny Todd after director Tim Burton realised Baron Cohen’s singing was not up to scratch.
According to The Sun newspaper, Baron Cohen who is playing Sweeny Todd’s rival hairdresser Signor Adolfo Pirelli, couldn’t hit all the right notes.
“He is going to do a fantastic job. But he couldn’t cut it with the singing. His voice was too low,” a source on the production said.
The source added: “Pirelli is a notoriously demanding role with some difficult songs. Any professional singer would struggle. So Sacha has been told to go for a rap style. It will be a bit like Jim Broadbent’s performance in Moulin Rouge. That won him a Bafta.”
