In response to hip hop mogul Russell Simmons' decision to cancel a speaking engagement at its Hip Hop Voter Education Rally, The Source issued a blistering press release accusing Simmons of undermining the hip hop community and implying that Simmons canceled his appearance to show solidarity with Eminem and Interscope Records, both of which have been targets of The Source's David Mays and Benzino in recent months. Some excerpts from the statement: "Russell Simmons has been exploiting hip hop for years"; "Russell is further from hip hop, the community and struggle it represents than he has ever been. Russell is a serious threat to the advancement of the black community, and hip hop culture because he exploits the perception in corporate America that he represents the views of the hip hop community when he does not"; "The Hip-Hop Summit, and Russell Simmons may represent the Hamptons and his rich friends, but they don't represent the hip hop community."
