Grammy-winning hip-hop artist/producer Dr. Dre will return to the silver screen with a role in the film "Training Day" and an executive producer credit on the soundtrack to "Diablo," according to the Hollywood Reporter. Dre previously starred in 1996’s "Set It Off," which was directed by "Diablo" director F. Gary Gray. The artist will release the "Diablo" soundtrack on his Aftermath label.

As for "Training Day," directed by Antoine Fuqua ("Romeo Must Die"), Dre plays a young Los Angeles policeman under the watchful eye of veteran cop Denzel Washington. Ethan Hawke co-stars as a rookie narcotics officer in the film, which is due in theaters in September. Snoop Dogg and Macy Gray also make cameos.

"Diablo" stars Vin Diesel ("Pitch Black") and Larenz Tate ("Why Do Fools Fall In Love?"). There’s no word yet on which artists will appear on the accompanying soundtrack.

Dre won the producer of the year Grammy last month for his work on Eminem’s controversial "The Marshall Mathers LP" and his own "Dr. Dre -- 2001."
