Grammy producers have sued Napster over possible money lost from the release of the Elton John and Eminem duet of "Stan." The president of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences Michael Greene told MTVNews " You have to ask yourself if people are going to buy it after it's been downloaded hundreds of thousands of times on Napster."
See Also:Napster was just issued an injunction from an U.S. District Court to remove all copyrighted songs from its files. The suit was filed Tuesday in a federal court in San Francisco. "Stan" was supposed to raise money for NARAS MusiCares program to help artists who need financial or medical assistance. Greene said that remixed versions of U2's "Beautiful Day" and Madonna's "Music" from the Grammy's ceremony were being prepared for possible release. Last summer NARAS filed an amicus brief supporting the major labels and the Recording Industry of America's lawsuit against Napster. Greene was disappointed that it took the court so long to give the injunction. He does not believe in Napster users being dissidents against the recording industry but said, "They're just getting free CDs that they don't have to pay for." Napster got a complaint against them from EMusic, an online service that offers music downloads to users. The company requested that Napster eliminate all songs it holds copyrights for to no avail and they charged them with copyright violation and unfair competition. In November, the firm asked Napster to notify users that who were downloading EMusic tracks to let them know they are violating copyright law and to block them if they continued to download the music. But on Wednesday EMusic asked Napster to reinstate blocked users saying that the company " bears no malice toward's Napster's users."
