A defense attorney for rapper Shyne suggested that Sean "Puffy" Combs might be responsible for shooting three injured people. Prosecutor Matthew Bogdanos declared in his opening statement that Jamal "Shyne" Barrow shot into a crowd, hurting three people at least partly with bullet fragments or riccocheted shells. He accused Sean "Puffy" Combs of shooting a gun into the ceiling at the same time. According to MTV News Shyne's lawyer Murray Richman responded by saying that "Yesterday, for the first time, I heard that Mr. Combs is charged with firing a gun, does [the prosecutor] have any knowledge as to what happened to the slug? The crime my client is charged with deals with fragments or riccochets." Richman's comments are the first from any of the lawyers in the case that suggest that other defendants might be responsible for their clients' alleged actions. Combs and his lawyers were not in court for Tuesday's hearing. Judge Charles Solomon asked Richman to submit his que! stions about Combs' alleged bullet as a written motion, and the lawyer agreed to do so. Tuesday's hearing addressed the question of whether an unidentified female witness who was at Club New York on the night of the shooting knew Shyne well enough to properly identify him. It ended after the judge decided to have the witness testify on her knowledge of Shyne outside the presence of the jury before her actual testimony later this week. The lawyers can not comment on the case because of a gag order issued by the judge.
