Black Thought (Tariq Trotter) of The Roots is in the studio working on his debut solo album; Masterpiece Theatre slated for a summer release. MCA Records will deliver the disc. A number of hip-hop producers are working on the traditional hip-hop based project. ?uestlove , drummer from The Roots is the only band member working on the LP. MTV News reports that Black Thought describes his solo joint as " [having] different types of production" instead of the sole live instrumentation of Roots albums. The roster of producers includes Pete Rock, Jay Dee, Japanese trip-hop maker DJ Krush, who produced the single "Hardware" that came out in November, Scott, the Roots original keyboardist, and Hedrush who produced tracks for Dead Prez 's Let's Get Free. Rockwilder, who has produced Jay-Z and others, will also work on the endeavor. Black Thought is the second person from the Roots to make a solo record. Rahzel the human beatbox made his album in 1999. Things Fall Apart was the group's fourth album. ?uestlove has just completed a jazz album with fellow Philadelphian bassist Christian McBride. Thought has a starring role in "Brooklyn Babylon" directed by Marc Levin, who received critical praise for 1998's "Slam." Levin co-wrote "Babylon" with veteran hip-hop journalist Bonz Malone. The film screened at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah and will be released in theaters later this year. It is a story about a rapper (Black) who falls in love with a young Jewish woman. He also has a part in Michael Rymer's "Perfume" due later this year.
