Rebecca Payne, a 22-year old senior at Northeastern University, was found dead in her Mission Hill apartment Tuesday morning. Nicholas Payne, her father, confirmed her identity, according to the Boston Globe. Her apartment door was left opened and she was shot in both legs and in the chest, police and a source said. Police found her blue Mini Cooper outside the apartment with an NU decal on the back. Investigators still are trying to determine whether Payne, a resident of New Milford, Connecticut, was randomly targeted and robbed, or knew her assailant, a police source said. City Councilor Michael Ross insisted Mission Hill is an “extremely safe community." The neighborhood is full of students from Northeastern and Wentworth Institute of Technology. Payne was an athletic training major at Northeastern. She moved into the two-bedroom apartment last August and lived with a female roommate. Payne's death is the 23rd homicide in the city of Boston thus far this year.
