Sugarland fared quite well at Sunday night’s 43rd annual Academy of Country Music Awards, as "Stay" claimed the Single Record and Song of the Year honors.
See Also:The song was a bit unconventional, which might be part of what worked in its favor. Jennifer Nettles noted on stage that there were no drums on the performance. Her musical partner, Kristian Bush, thanked people "for believing in a song that’s almost a five-minute-long acoustic song, and making that a hit on the radio. That’s something that wouldn’t have happened without everyone here." "Stay" is, of course, a song about a love triangle. While most songs about that topic turn the other woman into someone who’s evil and conniving, "Stay" takes her point of view and shows how agonizing that role can be. "I connect to this song on an emotional level of loss," Jennifer told the national radio show GAC Nights: Live From Nashville, "what it means to tell someone that you care about that you have to leave and you’re not happy about it for you, and you’re not happy about it for them, but that’s the right choice, regardless of the context." Even while the duo was collecting trophies, Sugarland premiered its next single, "All I Want To Do." It’s featured on Jennifer and Kristian’s third album, Love On The Inside, due July 22.
