Peggy Hill

Peggy Hill always has been a comical cartoon combination of cockiness and cowardice.

So if Kathy Najimy, the voice of Peggy on the animated sitcom King of The Hill, ever met Peggy, would Kathy like Peggy, or would Peggy drive Kathy nuts?

"I don't know -- if you ever met me, would you like me, or would I drive you nuts?" Najimy replied with a laugh during a conference call last week.

"I think I would like (Peggy). There is something really fun about someone who is so self-righteous and yet so flawed. If she were written (with only one of those traits), it would be so boring, to watch and to act."

Since today is Mother's Day, it is worth acknowledging that Peggy Hill is one of the more complex moms in TV history. Because she carries arrogance and vulnerability in equal volumes, the writers on King of The Hill aren't shy about making Peggy the butt of the joke, which is a nice change from the standard mom-is-smart, dad-is-dumb sitcom format.

Najimy, a longtime stage-and-screen fixture (you may remember her best for her roles in Sister Act with Whoopi Goldberg and Hocus Pocus with Bette Midler and Sarah Jessica Parker), said she has come across many people who, if not exactly like Peggy Hill, certainly exhibit Peggy Hill-like qualities.

"Wow, yeah, absolutely," Najimy said. "Haven't you met people at a party, and you're discussing something, and they add a bit of information with such conviction and everyone is so completely aware that it's wrong? But it's amusing for that moment, isn't it?

"And anyone who has kids, as they gather up information and spew it back to you, it always is wildly entertaining. Sometimes my daughter will just make proclamations, God bless her, and you just shake your head and go, 'Really? I never heard that.'

"I think (kids) get excited about new information coming into their heads and they just need it to go somewhere. That's a lot like Peggy, right? She gets some information and she's just so excited to let it out that she doesn't bother to make sure it's anywhere near correct."

The new episode of King of The Hill that will air tonight on Global and Fox actually has more of a father theme than a mother theme. Hank and Bobby get a little father-son bonding time because of a boat-building competition, but Hank gets spooked by some bats in the garage, forcing Bobby to handle construction on his own.

No doubt Peggy will have some strong opinions about what's going on. She always does.

So who would Peggy Hill say is the best TV mom of all time?

"Oh, she would pick Peggy Hill," Najimy said. "Peggy has a very strong parental code and is very proud of it. Not only will she parent her kid, she'll parent yours as well."

But if Peggy is No. 1, who's No. 2?

"I guess that lady with the blue hair," Najimy said. "I forget her name."
