And then there were five. Only five contestants remain on "American Idol" now, and they will compete to the tunes of Neil Diamond on Tuesday night. After Irish singer Carly Smithson was voted off the show last week, three guys and two gals are left to battle it out this week. Rocker David Cook and teen sensation David Archuleta continue to battle it out for the top spot. Cook proved he could handle a ballad last week when he performed "Music of the Night" on Andrew Lloyd Webber night, and the rocker still seems to be in a strong position to make it to the finale. Archuleta, on the other hand, botched some of his lyrics during his "Think of Me" song but it went unmentioned by the judges. The screams from the teens still continue, which means young David may continue his march to the finale. "Idol's" other male contestant, Jason Castro, still could upset one of the David's for a position in the finale. Judge Randy Jackson deemed his song "Memory" a train wreck last week, but that doesn't mean his fans have given up on the dreadlocked singer. A strong performance on Tuesday night could inch the fan-favorite one step closer to the finale. Brooke White and Syesha Mercado are the two ladies left standing on the "American Idol" stage, but many fans are predicting that neither will make it to the finale, and possibly not even through this week. White had an"I'm sorry, can we start over?" moment last week where she forgot her lyrics and started her song over, but apparently the misstep was enough to garner support from her fans who kept her on the show. Mercado had probably the best Broadway performance of the night last week, but still failed to connect with the audience. In addition to a great song Tuesday night, Mercado needs to reach out and touch her audience so they will continue to vote for her. "American Idol" airs on FOX on Tuesday at 8/7c.
