One of the strange truths about making videos is that the original recording has already been done when it comes time to shoot the piece, requiring the artist to lip-sync to his or her own song. But there's an art to lip-syncing, which Gretchen Wilson discovered when she did the video to her debut single, "Redneck Woman."
"The first day of shooting was a live performance of me doing the song," she told USA Weekend, "and the whole lip-syncing thing just didn't feel real to me."
Was there a solution? Absolutely. John Rich, who co-wrote "Redneck Woman," told her she needed to forget miming and start belting.
"John said, 'Just sing the song out loud then. I know that when you sing, you got your veins popping out of your throat. That's what I want to see,'" recalled Gretchen. "And he cranked up the volume of the song on speakers really loud so I'd have to scream to hear myself over it. It was awesome. It looked and felt real, and that made the video work."
