Stephanie Kuleba, a 18-year old cheerleader from Boca Raton, Florida, died Tuesday of malignant hyperthermia, a fatal reaction to anesthesia, during corrective breast surgery. Kuleba underwent surgery to correct asymmetrical breasts and an inverted areola. Doctors say the cause of death was malignant hyperthermia, a rare metabolic condition that can be triggered by certain anesthesia. During malignant hyperthermia, a patient's heart rate and metabolism rises, causing the body temperature to rise as high as 112 degrees. About one third of women will experience some degree of an inverted areola. As a woman gets older and wants to have children, corrective surgery is suggested in order to breast feed properly. Kuleba, a high school senior, was the captain of the varsity cheerleading team at West Boca High School and received scholarship offers from Tulane University and Florida State University. Kuleba planned to study medicine in college and become a plastic surgeon.
