Stephanie Kuleba, a 18-year old cheerleader from Boca Raton, Florida, died Tuesday after a fatal reaction to anesthesia during corrective breast surgery. Kuleba underwent surgery to correct asymmetrical breasts and an inverted areola. Doctors say the cause of death was malignant hyperthermia, a relatively rare metabolic condition that can be triggered by certain anesthesia. During malignant hyperthermia, a patient's heart rate and metabolism rises, causing the body temperature to rise as high as 112 degrees. Kuleba, a high school senior, was the captain of the varsity cheerleading team at West Boca High School and was fielding scholarship offers from Tulane University and Florida State University. Ironically, Kuleba planned to study medicine in college and become a plastic surgeon.
