David Paterson has learned a thing or two from the former New York state governor's sex scandal: He’s not keeping any skeletons in his closet. On the same day he was sworn in, Paterson, 53, admitted to having an extramarital affair. He tells New York’s Daily News that he began seeing “a woman other than my wife” for a few years beginning in 1999 when his marriage of 15 years “appeared to be going sour.” Paterson insists he did not use government or campaign funds to pay for his romantic getaways. (The New York Times reports that federal prosecutors are investigating whether Eliot Spitzer used campaign funds to hire his prostitute — a claim that he denies.) Paterson’s wife also admitted to having an affair. “But I went to counseling and we decided we wanted to make it work,” said Paterson, who is also legally blind. Paterson — New York’s first black governor — came clean in an attempt to "move forward. "There was an oath to be taken," he said after being sworn in yesterday. "There's trust that needs to be restored. There are issues that need to be addressed." They have two children: Ashley, 19, from Michelle's previous marriage, and Alex, 14.
