*To mark the 40th Anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s death, the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis is getting an extreme makeover and invites volunteers to join the festivities.
See Also:Taking place on Tuesday, March 25, the museum has teamed up with actor Samuel L. Jackson and the Hampton Hotels “Save-A-Landmark” program to bring more than 100 volunteers, along with local and national political leaders and influential members of the civil rights movement, together for painting, landscaping, building and cleaning the museum situated in the Lorraine Motel – the site where Dr. King was assassinated. Below are examples of what will be restored on-site: • Rosa Parks Bus – Cleaning and restoring the replica of the Montgomery City bus that initiated a new era in the American quest for freedom and equality • Sit-In Exhibit – Replacing electric wiring, painting and cleaning the replica of the historic Woolworth's lunch counter from Greensboro, N.C. • Edmund Petus Bridge – Repainting the replica of the site of the conflict of Bloody Sunday (March 7, 1965), where armed officers attacked peaceful civil rights demonstrators • Museum Exterior – Painting, pressure washing walls, installing wheelchair-accessible ramp, landscaping surrounding grounds and more. The restoration effort will begin at 8:45 a.m. CST on March 25, with the official check presentation made to the museum at 11 a.m. CST.
