A man who has stalked award winning actress Jodi Foster was arrested on Tuesday, hopefully putting an end to the three-year long stalking ordeal. The stalker was arrested for mailing a bomb threat to a Los Angeles airport.
Michael Smegal, 42, was charged in a U.S. District Court in Massachusetts with mailing a threatening letter to Van Nuys Airport in early December. Smegal is from Holliston, Massachusetts.
According to an affidavit, the letter was one of more than 100 nearly identical letters with references to Foster that have been mailed to celebrities, business executives, airports and other Los Angeles locations from September 2007 until January 2008.
Foster began receiving anonymous letters from Massachusetts beginning in 2004. In 2005, Smegal admitted to the police that he had sent the letters but agreed to stop.
If convicted, Smegal could face up to 10 years in prison followed by three years of supervised release and a $250,000 fine.
Foster is a two-time Oscar winner who began her career as a child actor. She won her first Academy Award for playing a rape victim in 1988's "The Accused."
