Tang Wei

Lust, Caution star Tang Wei has been banned from appearing in the Chinese media over her performance in the controversial movie, according to reports.

Wei is the face of skincare brand Ponds in her home country, in a deal thought to be worth six million yuan ($907,000). However, China’s State Administration of Radio Film and Television (SARFT) has ordered a new television commercial starring Tang to cease broadcast immediately, after a memo was sent to all television stations and print media on Thursday.

All print advertisements and features using the actress were also ordered to be pulled.

SARFT issued a statement on Friday saying it had informed all major film and broadcast entities and governing bodies that it was renewing prohibitions on "lewd and pornographic content" and content "show(ing) promiscuous acts, rape, prostitution, sexual intercourse, sexual perversity, masturbation and male/female sexual organs and other private parts", but did not single out Lust, Caution or Wei in the public notice.

In addition, all awards shows in China were advised to exclude Tang and the producers of Lust, Caution from their guestlists, while discussions about the film and Tang on online forums were deleted, reports Hong Kong newspaper Oriental Daily.

It’s not the first time Lust, Caution has suffered at the hands of the censors - last year (07), seven minutes of graphic scenes were cut from the movie on its release.
