Beastie Boys

The Beastie Boys and Moby performed to a sold-out audience at New York's Terminal 5 last night (March 4) for a charity show in conjunction with MTV and VH1. Proceeds benefited the Institute for Music and Neurologic Function, a cause introduced to the Beasties through a relative of Mike D's.

Moby has been a longtime supporter of the Institute, which studies and uses music as a medium for healing. "Hopefully we have a positive effect..." Mike D joked to Billboard.com. To read Billboard's review of the concert.

The benefit is one of only three shows the recent Grammy winners have planned for now. They head to Florida for the Langerado Music Festival on Friday (March 7) and cross the border the following day for the MX Beat Soundfest in Mexico City.

After finishing the shows, the Beastie Boys are planning to return to the studio to continue work on a new effort. But fans shouldn't get their hopes up to see the new record any time soon. "It's all new, original," says MCA, aka Adam Yauch, "but I don't think it's gonna come out this year, no."

The Beasties have farmed out the tracks from "The Mix-Up," their instrumental album from last year, to "assorted vocalists" -- some imaginary (Mike D: "Gordon Lightfoot ... Mariah Carey ... Marvin Hamlisch ... a former NBA all-star Clarence Witherspoon...") and other actual contributors like M.I.A., Jarvis Cocker and Snoop Dogg. The latter two have already sent back spoken-word pieces.
