Tupac Vs. Eminem

In this week's Speak On It forum everyone has an opinion about Tupac, and Eminem headlining a not so classic argument, Suge Knight battling Big Meech and Jimmy Henchmen for street cred, and the status of J. Dilla's legacy.

Without A Classic

Biggie, Nas, Jay-Z and Kanye West are all (arguably) among the rappers with "classic albums." While it depends on what you consider constitutes a classic, SOHH forum users posed the question, who's the best rapper not to have a classic album.

Mark2G4L named, "Ludacris and Eminem."

Meanwhile Stifsplif, said " 2pac...because of his albums like All Eyez On Me, Thug Life, etc have many good songs but not all fire. But his Greatest Hits would probably be the closest to a classic. Busta Rhymes is also another without a classic, for me When Disaster Strikes and ELE come close but he lost it after Anarchy."

Which great rapper lacks a classic in their catalog? Speak on it here.

Feared & Respected

Depending on what region you subscribe to, Suge Knight, Big Meech and Jimmy Henchmen, are regarded as having major street cred in their respective hoods. Forum members posed the question, "who's the most respected street figure amongst those three?"

According to GRapThaDon, "Jimmy Henchmen is. Suge is really more feared in the industry than he is in the streets. Henchmen is more feared and respected in the streets."

Alias2, said, "Meech got like a thousand soldiers at his call. 'Nuff said. Henchmen is not the gangsta he used to be. Suge is not as powerful as many might think. He may be a bad mothafukka, and he may be rich, but he doesn't got an army behind him."

Highgrade believes, "Most of these niccaz are much less powerful than we think. People throw their names around so much that it becomes like the fukkn bogeyman and we think they have the power to touch anyone at anytime. "

J Dilla Stanism?

Though the late hip-hop producer J Dilla passed away in February of 2006 due to complications from lupus, his legacy still lives on. The Detroit native, also known as Jay Dee, was a founding member of Slum Village, best known for producing tracks for Busta Rhymes, Common, De La Soul, D'Angelo, Erykah Badu and The Pharcyde.

Despite his success, SOHH forum readers questioned whether J. Dilla is overrated.

TheStandard says, "Don't take it wrong he has some bangers (I loved what he did for De La (stakes is high, much more), Pharcyde and a few Common joints) but I've yet to understand why cats are saying he's top 3. Jay Dee makes a great deal of elevator music. I understand he's gained a huge following since he passed but you got cats running around rocking shirts saying "Jay Dee has changed my life" and it's just insane to me. I thought that was bad but then Okayplayer takes J Dilla stanism to a whole new level."

Doublenegative, defends Dilla, saying, "I think that the impact of Dilla's style is what makes him who he is. Dilla basically fathered the late 90's underground sound, as well as touched the pulse of the neo-soul movement through his work with Bilal, D'Angelo (voodoo was colossal), and Erykah Badu (mama's gun = classic). Listen to the roots TFA and you will see his influence. His work with the rest of the soulquarians was absolutely classic material. His ability to chop samples, use filtered sick ass drums, and have thick, keyboard bass lines is still part of the underground format. I would let Dilla produce my whole album before I had a roster of 12 different so-called hot producers any day."
