Doing something outside the norm of what they're known for, the Nappy Roots are crossing genres in the New Year. Their latest is group member Skinny Deville's new collaboration with the Dave Matthews Band.
See Also:On their new single, titled "A Divine Intervention At 55th," the group crosses sounds between rock and hip-hop. How did it happen? Well, Deville said the team up came about after the two hooked up while on tour, an experience he said he can barely explain. "I was high every hour back then and I have never seen anything like it [touring and performing with the Dave Matthews Band]," said Skinny Deville. "People were camped out as if it was a KOA Campground. We did two nights in each city because of the attendance. I do remember the food was excellent and the beer was cold [backstage with DMB]. They balled out more than the biggest rapper could have. We had one bus and they had like ten black matching buses, with every member of the band having their own bus. They were baller status for real." Despite the shows were a one time thing, and the collaboration is too, Skinny looks back on the experience with great pride. "Their set was great and the fans knew damn near every word. For Dave to be as big as he is, he was cool as hell. Laid back and mellow... I thank him for that opportunity. Not many hip-hop acts can say 'they toured with The Dave Matthews Band' and rocked it like we did." The Nappy Roots have been touring off and on with the Dave Matthews Band since 2005. The single, which is currently featured on the site, is a free giveaway for fans of both the Nappy Roots and the Dave Matthews Band, recorded earlier this year. The Grammy-nominated Nappy Roots, who hail from Kentucky, exploded into the hip-hop scene with their massive 2002 hit single, "Awnaw" featuring Jazze Pha. After a long silence and tug-of-war between major labels, the Nappy Roots are gearing up for the release of their new album, titled The Humdinger. At press time, there was no official date for the album's release.
