Missy Elliott

When it comes to hip-hop music videos, Missy Elliott is an innovator, always pushing the envelope. And with her upcoming "Ching-A-Ling" video, it's no different as she releases the first ever music video in 3D. The video will premiere on BET on Monday (Feb. 4) on "106 & Park" at 6:30 p.m. in 2D and then on Friday (Feb. 8) on "BET Late" in 3D. Both versions will also be on BET.com on Tuesday.

In an exclusive interview with BET.com, Missy explained the video. "Basically a 3D video is when you almost feel like something is coming outside of the screen. I’ve done the head thing [in my videos], but it’s not the same. It feels more like it’s in the room with you. [In ‘Ching-A-Ling’] I got leaves and confetti stuff," she said. "When I look at it, it feels like a leaf can fall on you. All this stuff comes outside of your TV instead of just hitting the screen and stopping."

For the direction of the video, Missy has once again teamed up with longtime visual collaborator Dave Meyers, the director of some of Missy's biggest videos including "Get Your Freak On."

Missy says she was inspired to do the video after watching Terminator 3D at Disney World. "I was in there with little kids and even myself, I’m in there grown as heck and I’m ducking. I was like, ‘this would be fire to do a video like that because I’ve done so many styles of videos whether it was myself or with somebody else.' I thought, is there anything left for me to do? And 3D was the only thing left besides setting myself on fire," she says.

In order to get the full effect of the video, viewers will have to pick up their own 3D glasses, at select Adidas stores, and via radio giveaways in various cities (see list below).

"This is truly historic. People have talked about and tried to make it happen before, but no one has ever set out to purposefully create a 3D music video and then actually made it happen," Meyers says. "Once again, Missy and I are happily and comfortably in uncharted territory!”

The single "Ching-A-Ling" will appear on the movie soundtrack Step Up 2:The Streets, which will be released on Tuesday (Feb. 5). The song will also appear on Missy's upcoming 7th studio album, still untitled, set for a Spring 2008 release.
