David Letterman

David Letterman got close to former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards Tuesday night on "The Late Show." Edwards got away with a quick tease to his hair, but failed to walk away with an endorsement from the late night host.

Edwards made an eight minute appearance on "The Late Show" that gave the candidate a chance to dazzle viewers with his sense of humor and to discuss is campaign. Letterman teased Edwards about his notorious $400 haircuts, but a gracious Edwards gave the host permission to touch his immaculately manicured coif.

When asked about the squabble between Sens. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) and Barack Obama (D-IL) that occurred on the recent CNN-sponsored debate, Edwards enthusiastically stated his attempts to rise above the bickering.

"What I was trying to do was represent the grown-up wing of the Democratic Party last night," Edwards said.

When Letterman asked the candidate how he and the other candidates got along, a smiling Edwards said "we can't stand each other," followed by instantaneous laughter from the audience.

Letterman acknowledged day time talk show host Oprah Winfrey's endorsement of Barack Obama, and Edwards prodded the host with, "I'm kind of thinking you can do for me what Oprah's done for Barack."

Despite Edwards having pleased the crowd with his suggestion, Letterman deflected by commending Oprah Winfrey, who the host had a drawn out feud and truce with, by saying "she's admired and she's beloved and she's a role model for men and women all over the world now." With the timing of a stand-up comedian, Mr. Edwards interrupted: "You think you're not?"
