Donda West apparently died of a combination of heart disease and complications from plastic surgery, according to the Los Angeles coroner's office reports The Associated Press. But they also say that they will never know for sure what actually killed Kanye West's mother.
The 58-year-old died on November 10, the day after she had a tummy tuck and breast reduction surgery from now-controversial plastic surgeon Dr. Jan Adams. The autopsy report shows that West had coronary artery disease, including blockages of 50-70 percent in two arteries. At just 5'2, West weighed 188 pounds and developed bronchopneumonia in one lung after surgery. Toxicology tests showed West did not die of an overdose of pain medication. West also did not have any internal bleeding.
"It is my opinion Ms. West died from some pre-existing coronary artery disease and multiple postoperative factors following surgery," Dr. Louis A. Pena, a deputy medical examiner said in the autopsy report. The coroner's office could not definitely say that West may have lived had she not had the surgery, because its possible that the pre-existing heart disease itself could have been the cause.
West consulted another plastic surgeon before deciding on Dr. Adams. That surgeon, Dr. Andre Aboolian, told West she should get a medical clearance before surgery because of a "pre-existing condition." It has since been revealed that Adams has been investigated by the state medical board because of DUI convictions and was at risk of losing his medical license. Adams has denied any wrongdoing, and reportedly advised West that she should "receive post-operative care at another facility." West went home instead.
Reached by The Associated Press via email, Adams said, "The coroner's report confirms what we have always believed. Until further discussion with the West family we have no additional comment." Kanye West, who has not yet spoken publicly to any media outlet about his mother's death, had no comment.
The report said that West was experiencing some pain but felt fine the day she had the surgery, but the next day she had problems breathing and died soon after. The women who found West unconscious and made the 911 call thought she was having a heart attack, the autopsy report says. West did undergo a stress test in January 2007, after experiencing chest and shoulder pain, but those symptoms did not return.
