TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKERS were the second choice to perform at the Super Bowl next year (08) - the EAGLES were approached to play the half-time show and turned organizers down. According to music magazine Rolling Stone, the Hotel California hitmakers refused to play at the American football final in Arizona and gave no reason for declining the offer. Meanwhile, drummer/singer Don Henley insists the group would not turn down the chance to play at country mecca the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee - if he and his bandmates were asked. He says, "That would be an honour... Certainly, country is one of the last bastions of good songwriting - and of singing in tune." Country music is now akin to what my generation was listening to in the '60s and '70s."
