R Kelly

Black activists cite sex charges against the R & B star in calling for action at the Forum on Friday.

Jasmyne Cannick and other black activists plan to station themselves across the street from the Forum on Friday to protest a concert that night by R. Kelly, the R&B superstar and celebrity defendant, but Cannick is already resigned to the fact that her picket line will be outnumbered by scalpers.

"It's like pulling teeth to get people to talk about this," Cannick said. "It's a challenge to get the black community to even discuss it. . . . They're acting like he doesn't have 14 counts of child pornography against him. . . . We're all acting like we don't have daughters and nieces and little sisters."

The silence that seems deafening to Cannick is a relief to Derrell McDavid, Kelly's manager. "There's been no protests on this tour," he said Tuesday. "It's just been a warm embrace and sold-out shows." (The Thursday show at Honda Center in Anaheim, however, has been called off due to sluggish sales, and refunds are being offered.)

Kelly was caught up in a tempest in 2002 when a videotape that purportedly showed him engaging in sex acts with a girl in her early teens opened the door to criminal charges and lawsuits from females who claimed they were also his underage sex partners. Even before that, Kelly had a reputation for sexual contact with female minors -- not only did he write the 1994 hit "Age Ain't Nothing but a Number" for the late singer Aaliyah, it was revealed later that he married her when she was 15 and he was 27.

The criminal case is still winding through the courts after repeated delays, but Kelly's career has not only endured, it has thrived. In 2002-2003, he had one of his biggest hits ever, "Ignition (Remix)," which kicked off a run of successful years. This year, "Double Up" became the fifth R. Kelly album to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and he has just been nominated for two Grammys. As McDavid said: "He's at the top of his game."

On Tuesday, a group of protesters gathered at the Forum to call on the venue's owner, the Faithful Central Bible Church, to call off the show. In 2005, the church canceled a performance by a heavy-metal band that Chief Operating Officer Marc Little said was "antithetical to our beliefs." Little and other Forum executives did not return calls Tuesday. Cannick was not optimistic about her cause: "Everyone is making money, and everyone seems OK with him. People really need to wake up."

Dear Mr. Boucher,

I recently read that there were activists who intended to protest the R. Kelly Double-up concert to be held at an upcoming Forum event.  It appears they are protesting not for the language or overtly sexual content, but for allegations that have not been proven, nor evidence that has been accepted as fact.  Therefore the allegations remain "hearsay" and perhaps the reason the trial has been delayed for over 5 years.

There is reasonable doubt that Mr. Kelly was not the person on the video.  If it were clear, he would have been arrested and remained in jail to this day. The circumstances surrounding the tape surfacing is an even greater mystery.

I am sure you are aware of the legal system.  Having said that you'd also know that the person who anonymously mailed the video tape to the Chicago Sun Times several years after it allegedly occurred, remains anonymous because that individual(s) would have to testify in a court of law as to how they obtained this tape.  Perhaps this would then lead to the origin of the tape as well.  Don't you find it equally curious that the "do gooder" who mailed the tape to the newspaper won't help the authorities to prosecute the alleged pedophile?  Perhaps it is the same reason the case remains open.

Now, through a different set of lens, one wonders why it has become so important to prosecute R. Kelly that the State is considering "veins" as the evidence since no other concrete evidence has been upheld.

Don't you think it may be more than mere coincidence that the mystery tape appeared only after Mr. Kelly fired a singer he was producing by the name of Sparkle (Aunt of the supposed victim) along with the person who was managing him at that time?  Another coincidence is that the tape is said to supposedly have been made in 1998, but not given to the Chicago Sun Times until 2002, shortly after the terminations of the two individuals named above. Or, how about the logic of the anonymous “do gooder” who gave the tape to the newspaper instead of the police. Or after the tapes made the press, copies of these same tapes were being distributed and sold to street vendors and the net for profit. Where did these people get their copies from? Was this all a set up to extort money, or revenge, or just someone trying to embarrass the well known playboy whose weakness has always been women. Hmmm. I don’t know about you, but I am still doing my research into the matter.

Perhaps Ms. Cannick can share with her followers what concrete facts and evidence she is going by to incite their anger and hostility. I also hope she is prepared to stand by any aftermath that can possibly get out of control with some crazed fanatic who might decide to take the spurious allegations as fact simply because she has told them so, and then decides to do physical harm to Mr. Kelly and or members of his tour.

Of course Mr. Kelly’s antics don’t help his current charges, but are we convicting Mr. Kelly on his being an obscene showman and lyricist, or the crime he supposedly committed? Does his bad boy reputation override reasonable doubt?

Don’t you find it odd that no White Evangelical protesters have ever assembled to try and destroy R. Kelly's performances? Perhaps, like me, and many other intelligent sideline watchers, we are are separating spins and accusations that have taken hold in the court of public opinion and waiting for facts to emerge through a court of law. Many of us understand the charges are still allegations and have not yet been proven.

But I am sure these so-called activists will continue to destroy their victims by the new form of a death sentence, character assassination.  All you need is access to a keyboard and the Internet.

And as a sidebar, when I visited Ms. Cannick personal website I found ads for sex as well as social justice links. I believe this speaks to both her lack of feminist values as well as her hypocritical ethics/morals.

And just a bit of education for Ms. Cannick and her group to chew on,

Ephebophilia is an adult engaging in sexual acts with 12 years old and up

Pe-do-phil-ia
n. recurrent, intense, sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges or behaviors involving sexual activity with a prepubescent child (under 12 years old)
--American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual
In the Netherlands, the law allows children ages 12 to 16 to make their own decision about sex, though if Mom and Dad feel a relationship is exploitative, they can ask the authorities to investigate.
The states define the age of consent for sex differently. Most say it is 16, but some say 18. In Hawaii, it's 14. So are teenagers from the onset of puberty (usually about 13) to the age of sexual majority (usually 16) always victims when they have sex with someone older? In Illinois sexual consent is 17 years old.

If Ms. Cannick is truly an equal opportunity defender of human justice, she may want to assemble her crew and protest for the group that follows Mr. Kelly's tour at the Forum, "Iron Maiden".  Now that's a group who openly appears to be part of Satan's Circle.
