Hollywood star GEORGE CLOONEY has called on the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to help end the bloodshed in the war-torn Darfur region of Western Sudan.
The actor was visiting the city of Dubai, UAE to attend the regional premiere of his latest movie Michael Clayton - and used the visit to help highlight the plight of people in the stricken area.
Clooney, 46, asked for the Gulf state to join the campaign to end the near-five-year conflict in the African nation.
He says, "We are trying to find places (through which) we can have a real conversation with people in Sudan and President Omar al-Beshir. And obviously here (in the UAE) they have an influence." Clooney is due to be honoured for his work raising awareness of the situation in Darfur, along with fellow actor Don Cheadle. The pair will both receive the Peace Summit Award at the World Summit of Nobel Peace Prize Laureates in Rome, Italy on 13 December (07).
