high & mighty

Back in 96’ when The High & Mighty first came onto the scene, all I would hear were statements like "Those cats are dope for some white guys." When I hear heads say things like that it really aggravates me. I feel like this, the term "emcee" and "deejay" should see no color. If you are dope, you are dope and your race should not even be an issue. True, the Hip-Hop field is mostly African American dominated and there are very few white artists/groups out there. For the ones who are out there putting in work, making the heads happy they don’t deserve to be categorized and moved to the side just because they are white or any other race besides African American. Hip-Hop is all love and its main purpose it to unite everyone, no what race or gender you may be.

Now let’s talk about this album.

The debut LP from The High & Mighty, "Home Field Advantage," is a great start for the Rawkus duo Mr. Eon and DJ Mighty Mi. The track "Top Prospects," produced and mixed by the alchemist features some Likwit Crew members, Evidence from Dilated Peoples and Defari. Mr. Eon drops a nice opening verse. "Taste this delicious mystic malicious/ridiculousness I tease with my snippets/I strip this down to the core and explore/many more what I have in-store for you in this era this mics stellar terror/my scripts consist of printed parchness/I gave the apple to Eve and she ate it/built the pyramids in his face and now he fuckin hate it/pro create the reborn/keep this mic torn.

I like the idea when a group can tell a story through a song. The High & Mighty bring this to us in their track, "Dick Starbuck (Porno Detective)" Mr. Eon is the narrator and DJ Mighty Mi provides him with some ill theme music. "Mr. E rock shows, this she didn’t know/it was this honkee that made her say ho! /no way was she sayin no! /leave the disco/right after Mi rocks all stereos/after 2nd Ave. ass I gotta have/take the Jack and the Colt poor the beer on draft/one or the other just to uncover/just this night Mr. E be the lover/now let’s play doctor, should I say dentist/I’ll be Starbuck and you the dental hygienist/first brush the teeth, then rinse please/orally like Monica Lewinsky. Dick Starbuck is just a busy guy.

Once again we hear smooth production work from the alchemist on the track "Open Mic Night (remix)," featuring Wordsworth and Thirstin Howell III. Mr. Eon starts it off with his verse. "Mr. E-O-N must be about me/the one and only high & mighty emcee/ who be perpendicular when I be tickin ya/E smoke up on the size of a fibula/prepare for the slaughter/the lyrical marauder/freakable acts like me and your daughter did.

The High & Mighty have released a pretty phat debut album. Mr. Eon shows us his lyrical abilities and he has DJ Mighty Mi backing him up with the beats and production work. Anything that Rawkus drops is always a must buy.
