I once told a friend that I would buy anything that Rawkus puts on a record. This single is just proof of my testimony. Every project that I have heard on Rawkus thus far is so well put together. The collaborations are magical. Not the usual thinking that would put a few nice emcees together trying to outshine each other. But instead we get complimentary styles that some politics would never have come together. My first Rawkus adventure was the Body Rock single with the unusual collaboration of Mos Def feat. Q-tip formerly of TBC, and Tash (Catastrophe) of the Alkoholiks. This East Coast styles mixed with a taste of West Coast sting brought flavor to that particular track. And basically that is what I am most familiar with when it comes to Rawkus, flavor. Then there was also an unforgettable B-side, Manifesto, by Kweli outlining the rules of engagement for Hip-Hop warfare. I was charged by the powerful message contained in the lyrics and I was also impressed by the organization of the concepts. To even better the experience, I had the opportunity to see Kweli perform live soon after. Talib Kweli's stage presence was amazing. At this same particular show there was this DeeJay that was backing up this Ohio group named MOOD, and was also playing some of his own tracks. The beats needless to say were hot, the DeeJay Hi Tek, the other fifty-cent of Reflection Eternal. Hi Tek produced the Down for the Count track, and it is the sweetest. This cat is very well on his way to making a name for himself. The music for this track is like nothing I've heard in a while and much suited for another magical Rawkus collabo. This time some wizard at the Rawkus camp teamed Talib Kweli with Rah Digga, and Xzibit. Pure genius once again, pure genius. First of all anything Rah Digga puts her raw lyrics on, is parkay anyway. Xzhibit was still able to shine despite the change in his lyrical content and direction of his career. Xzhibit's vocal presence alone most times is enough to carry him on this track. Talib Kweli of course takes every opportunity he has to be heard very seriously. Kweli is careful in making sure he drops a jewel or two in every verse. Always clever especially when stating might be over your head, but it's straight from the heart/ I show my love in the light while y'all hate in the dark The words Kweli speak are of action, and are sure to leave some emcees down for the count. Those who can't take the heated lyrics, play the instrumental, and let the beat ride.
